Yayoi Kusama, Japanese Contemporary Art Icon
Yayoi Kusama is an iconic Japanese figures in contemporary art world. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, she has captivated audiences worldwide with her mirrored rooms, oversized pumpkins, and immersive installations that continue to draw record-breaking crowds.
A pioneering force in the avant-garde scene, Kusama not only challenged perceptions of space, repetition, and the infinite—she also laid the groundwork for today’s immersive exhibitions. (Long before the age of Instagram-ready installations.)
Yayoi Kusama participated twice in the Venice Biennale: in 1966 for an unauthorized performance of her work ‘Narcissus Garden’, and in 1993, she represented Japan at the 45th Venice Biennale.
